Qi (2013)

For Wind Band

Duration:  5'15

Program Notes

Qi (pronounced 'chee') is a person's life force.  The literal translation, 'air' is a part of the construction of the composition.

The work begins with a statement of a three-measure motive in the solo euphonium.  This motive is translated through the soloist and then chamber ensembles before whole sections.  The work transitions from a dark, ominous opening through many emotions into a bright and glorious finale.
